The Gutierrez Memorial Fund was established in the spring of 2010, to honor the life of artist, visionary and community leader, John K. Gutierrez.

The objective of the Gutierrez Memorial Fund was a personal one- the making of the John K. Gutierrez Memorial Fireplace. Gutierrez Studios started the project off by donating the fireplace design. But to make the dream a reality, a substantial budget was necessary for materials, fabrication and installation.

On October 23, 2010, we held the first Gutierrez Memorial Walk to raise funds for the construction. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. Though many of us on the committee had assumed we would not reach our financial goal in one day – the walk was a huge success. Thanks to the amazing generosity of our community and local business sponsors, we proudly reached our goal and the construction process began.

Over the winter months, the design, engineering, permitting and fabrication was completed. The fireplace was moved from Gutierrez Studios and installed permanently at Clipper Mill on February 25, 2011.

To see a video of the first walk and process images documenting the design, fabrication, and installation of the memorial fireplace, please visit our Fireplace page.

The Memorial Fireplace was an ambitious project. But we did it! The dedication was held on March 19th- to the light of a super moon and we inaugurated the fireplace in grand Guti-style! The fireplace continues to be lit regularly and we invite you to come remember John and experience the magic of our community achievement.

The legacy continues!

Built on the success of the Memorial Fireplace, the community’s enthusiasm and our commitment to carrying on John’s legacy it was decided that the Gutierrez Memorial Walk would become an annual event. All proceeds raised go to the Gutierrez Memorial Fund, dedicated to supporting the arts in Maryland.  Please go to the About Us page and learn more about the Gutierrez Memorial Fund’s history and mission.

To all those who made the Fireplace a reality and have participated in our annual walks – we thank you and look to your continued support.

The 13th annual Gutierrez Memorial Walk will be held on October 22, 2022.

Help us keep the fire burning!
